At the Evanescent Press in the mountains of Mendocino County, California, we publish original books on our own hand made paper, printed letterpress from hand set type, and hand bound. We make paper from hemp, flax, kenaf, abaca, cotton, and other natural fibers, including the local weeds that grow wild on our mountain. Our papers are natural waterleaf (without added sizing), and are buffered to a neutral pH for archival quality.

     In addition to fine book and art papers, we also make an unusual collection of decorative papers including Flower, Moss, Grape Wine, Plum Wine, Seaweed, and Wild Ocean.

     We also make custom papers for special projects, and offer commercial services of letterpress printing and hand bookbinding.

     We offer letterpress printing from hand set type or plates made from your own typography and/or artwork. We use either a Chandler & Price platen press or a Vandercook cylinder press. For best results, we usually print on dampened paper. For most work, hand made paper is usually torn to size, as the torn edges resemble natural deckles. Business cards or other small formats are usually more effective cut. We can also prepare a custom deckle to produce paper in any size (up to 18" x 24") with four natural deckles.
