At last I find some substantive proposal to ameliorate the horrible state of the earth. On every hand, the accelerating collapse of life as we know it continues unabated. The Trump debacle is beyond belief, of course, but there are genocidal wars going on all over the place. But, horrible as these events are – in Palestine, in Ukraine, and in the United States, the most unspeakable horror is the complacency with which most people seem to shrug it off, continuing to push one foot in front of the other as if life as we know it could go on, unaffected by these catastrophic events.
How is that Donald Trump is not confined to a strait jacket, pending his impeachment trials ? Of course, in order for impeachment to achieve any relief, we will also need to impeach the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, the President pro tempore of the Senate, the Secretary of State, and the whole rostrum of Trump’s cabinet, all of whom follow in the line of succession.
And how is it that Bibi Netanyahu is not hanging by his thumbs somewhere while awaiting his transport to the Hague for his trial ? The United States not only tolerates the guy, but they fund him to the tune of $44 million per day ! [$3.8 billion per year “by agreement with Israel,” or $10.410,958.90 million per day, plus an additional $17.9 billion since the start of the hostilities on October 7th. Adding it all up and dividing by 532 days, I make it approximately $44,057,575.44 per day.]
Yes, there are plenty of other rascals running around our planet causing mayhem and murder, such as the Fossil Fuel industry moguls, the rapacious Big Pharma gnomes, the Timber industry, and plenty of others, such as the Directors of Monsanto (Bayer), and many more, but those three Big Ones form a formidable Axis of Evil (Trump, Putin, and Netanyahu).
Anyway, all of this is just the ordinary reality of our 21st (and probably last) century, but it does no good to wring one’s hands and howl about all the folly and injustice in the world – we must propose some sort of action that might make things better, or it is all just shouting into the wind. Well, Abdul Jabbar in Palestine has come up with a very sensible proposal, identifying one of the principle bottle-necks stymieing any forward progress – the United Nations Veto enjoyed by the permanent members of the Security Council. Here is the article as published by Countercurrents.org.
In a nutshell, the United States has used its veto about 50 times to protect Israel’s violations of international law. According to the UN Charter, the five veto-holding countries have to agree to end their veto power [which isn’t likely – understatement alert]. “Speaking for the international community, the UN Secretary General should request those five members to surrender their veto power to make the world body democratic. In case of non-cooperation from those countries, the remaining 188 countries should form a new world body without the veto power. The headquarters of the new UN could be anywhere in the world. If the current veto-holding countries wish to join this new world organization, they should be allowed to do so.”
There you go ! There is a really sweet idea ! It is time the rest of the world stand up to the United States and declare that they’re not going to take it anymore. As Leonard Cohen sings, “Democracy is coming to the USA” – any day now, but don’t stand on one foot while you wait.
